Finding the Right Schools for You

Finding the Right Schools for You

October 30, 20232 min read

It's back to school season! So let's talk about school districts. When you're a parent looking to move, school districts become a top priority. Of course, going on school tours and meeting with staff can help make your decision easier, but that's not always an option if you're moving several hours away or even across state lines. Here are some tips for finding the best school for your kids when you move.

1. Make a Wish List

First thing you need to do is sit down and make a wish list of everything you hope this new school has to offer. Does your child require special services? Put that on the list. Are they into sports, theater, or music? Write that down too. Do you want smaller class sizes? Do you like a school that offers a lot of diversity? Write it all down! Then prioritize the list. Classroom size might be important, but is it more important than a top notch STEAM program? If your child is old enough, have them weigh in too. See what their priorities are. It can also make them excited about the prospect of a new school!

2. Talk with us as your Real Estate Agent

It's a Realtor's job to know the area they serve. The average home price, up and coming neighborhoods, how quickly homes are selling, and, of course, the best school districts. Talk to them about your wish list. With that list, your home price range, and a general geographical location you want to stay in, they can narrow down options for you quickly.

3. Do Your Research

After your Realtor gives you some housing options, research the public school district each house is in. See how many items they check off your wish list. If you can't find the information you're looking for online, call the school to ask directly. When considering private schools, it's also important to see if they have available space. Just like you prioritized your wish list earlier, now prioritize the schools you researched from "Oh my goodness, yes, our child has to go here" to "Let's avoid this one at all costs."

4. Make Your Move

So you've narrowed it down to a couple school possibilities (always good to have a backup), and your agent has given you housing options in each location. All that's left to do is choose! As soon as you're under contract, start the process of getting your child enrolled in their new school. It's also a good idea to join local parent's groups to start building connections in your new community. Then the fun part really starts...packing!
